Achaval Ferrer, Mendoza, Argentina, Malbec 2017

Tasting Notes: Achaval-Ferrer Malbec typically expresses deep flavors of blackberry, plum and licorice, appropriately backed by aromas of freshly turned earth and dense, chewy tannins. In warmer, New World regions, such as Mendoza, Malbec will be intensely ripe, and full of fruit and spice. From its homeland in Cahors, its rusticity shines; dusty notes and a beguiling bouquet of violets balance rich, black fruit.

Founded in 1998, Achaval-Ferrer is a team of friends in Mendoza who dream about great wines. Achaval-Ferrer is also a collection of old vineyards in beautiful places. They are committed to the production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc that are expressive of their terroir. In that spirit, their production is grounded in three pillars:

Centennial vines, new gems: The older the species, the more they produce. Only a local sage can pass on such a legacy.

Low yield, high concentration: They produce more concentrated, complex and lively fruits thanks to a set of techniques including pruning and thinning.

Minimum intervention, maximum expression: They respect and preserve the terroir and its messages all throughout the winemaking process, obtaining pure, highly expressive wines.

They are a small winery because this is the key to top quality. Low yields allow the vineyards to express their personality in the grapes. Minimal intervention winemaking allows the grapes to fully express their vineyard in the bottle. Each of their wines is a different expression of Malbec:

  • Archaval-Ferrer Malbec is about varietal tipicity.
  • Quimera blend is about Malbec as the key to complexity and balance.
  • Fincas (Single Vineyards) are about how Malbec expresses different soils and microclimates
