Excellence in Napa Valley winemaking is in our DNA. Our winery was established in 2012 by the partners of Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel. After some 30 years of making and enjoying some of the most celebrated Cabernets in the region, Bella Union presented a new challenge: The opportunity to find the perfect union of blended Cabernet — to explore the next evolution in a comprehensive Napa Valley winemaker’s repertoire.

Our vineyard comprises 25 acres positioned in Rutherford, California, along the auspicious Bella Oaks Lane. This once-unassuming road provided passage from Rutherford through the Mayacamas Mountains and into the erstwhile-flourishing Bella Union Mining Company. Like the mining company that became our winery’s namesake, we recognize the full gift our land can produce. Unlike them, our treasure grows above-ground, renewed each year.

Over time, Napa Valley came into its own as a world-renowned American Viticultural Area (AVA) — thanks in large part to visionary farmers like John Benson, who founded Far Niente, and John C. Sullenger, whose farmstead became the home to Nickel & Nickel. It’s in their expertise that the keen eye can spot the early signs of greatness that would define the valley as one of the world’s premier Cabernet regions in the decades hence. And it’s in their vision that we can trace the seeds that would grow into Bella Union.

Bella Union was founded in 2012 by the owning partners of Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel. The grapes are sourced from a 25-acre Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in Rutherford along Bella Oaks Lane. Winery Notes: “Located in Rutherford along Bella Oaks Lane “hallowed ground for Napa Valley Cabernet” the 25-acre Bella Union Vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small portion devoted to Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This western bench location offers an ideal combination of cool evenings and warm afternoons, which, in turn, allows the grapes to ripen fully and evenly. The site’s well-draining, gravelly loam soil plays an equally important role, contributing to the signature character of the vineyard. The fruit is intense, beautifully proportioned and complex with aromatic ripe plum, black cherry and currant flavors.”

Bella Union was founded in 2012 by the partners of Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel. The winery is located on a 25-acre Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard that runs along Bella Oaks Lane, a storied Cabernet growing area in the heart of Rutherford. We call this wonderful wine Bella Union as a nod to the history of Bella Oaks Lane, which was known as the Bella Union Roadway in the late 1800’s. At that time, the country lane led to the gorgeous Mayacamas Mountains and eventually to the Bella Union Mining Company.

The Bella Union story is both a new story and a historic one. It is this blending—of both deep experience and contemporary imagination—that enables a blended Cabernet of such structure, depth and distinctiveness.
