The Mittnacht family has been making high-expression wines at the foot of the fortified church of Hunawihr for three generations.
Paul, the grandfather, passed on his know-how to his two sons, André and Louis. The latter, combining their efforts, created the Domaine Mittnacht Frères in 1963. The Mittnacht family currently has 11 hectares of vineyards spread over the best terroirs of Hunawihr, Ribeauvillé and Mittelwihr:
87 ares from Place called Muehlforst to Hunawihr
167 ares from Grand Cru Rosacker to Hunawihr
40 ares from Grand Cru Osterberg to Ribeauvillé
18 ares from Grand Cru Mandelberg to Mittelwihr/Beblenheim
30 ares from Clos La Courtille to Hunawihr – Monopoly
The average annual production of Domaine Mittnacht Frères is about 80,000 bottles. The Domain exports 30% of its production to many countries in Europe, North America and Asia.
Marc has been giving the company a new lease of life since 1995. The vines have been driven with respect for the environment for several years. No synthetic products in the vineyard, a great respect for the natural cycle of the vine and its terroir, harvests and sorting entirely manual, a minimum of interventions in the cellar and no use of wine products (apart from a minimum of sulphur) in order to respect the quality of the grapes. This philosophy naturally pushes the field, since 1999, in organic and biodynamic culture, one that best respects the environment, the health of consumers and above all the personality and identity of wines from the great Appellations d’Origine Controlled. This approach is certified by Ecocert and Demeter, certifying bodies approved by the French Ministry of Agriculture.
The wines of Domaine Mittnacht Frères are regularly cited in reference guides and magazines – the Hachette Guide of French Wines, La revue des Vins de France, Cuisine et Vins de France, Gault and Millau, Wine magazine, Johnson, Decanter…
