In simple words Florent Cosme makes wonderful Vouvray white wine!!
30 year old Florent Cosme has deep roots in Vouvray, with his family having been in the village for generations. Being the youngest sibling in the family, the vineyards originally owned by his grandmother, went to his older brother Mathieu. This small speed bump would not stop young Florent from pursuing his dream of making wine in his sacred home village. After finishing oenology school, he took a full time position with famed Vouvray producer Vincent Careme as one of his key vineyard managers. In 2010, he quietly accrued some beautiful, old vine parcels along the Premiere Cote of Vouvray (the steepest and rockiest section of Vouvray – home to the best vines of the village). During nights and weekends, he would work his 4 ha of vines biodynamically, eventually making his first vintage in 2011. Today he has committed himself full time to his small, but growing domaine. Only indigenous yeasts are used, never any malo, and the wines are aged in older 400L barrels. With his small domaine, Florent is part of a young and talented group of vignerons who have elevated this noble appellation through biodynamic farming and non-interventionist winemaking.
If you have had the good sense to consume a bottle or two of Vouvray now and again, then I expect you are probably aware of the significance of the première côte, the first south-facing slope which runs roughly parallel with the Loire, both upstream and downstream of the town of Vouvray. If you have ever been to Vouvray you may well have walked among the vines here, and if you have I would wager that it is the little section between Vouvray and La Croix Buisée, where the Clos du Bourg (Domaine Huet) is to be found, that you have visited. And if not then surely it was the section one step to the east where Le Mont (Domaine Huet again), Les Perruches (Philippe Foreau) and Les Girardières (Bernard Fouquet) are located. These are, after all, some of the appellation’s the most famous vineyards, and its most renowned proprietors.
The première côte stretches far beyond these few vineyards though, in both directions, and although these other slopes are perhaps not quite so profound as those gathered between Vouvray and Vernou-sur-Brenne, they should certainly not be ignored. The village of Noizay is where Cosme vineyard is!! This is where Florent Cosme makes wonderful Vouvray white wine.
