Ronco dei Tassi, Collio DOC, Fruili, Sauvignon Blanc, 2019

James Suckling 91pts: Ripe-pear, pineapple, fresh-herb and lemon-curd aromas. It’s medium-bodied with tangy acidity and a gently waxy texture. Focused with a mineral finish. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast 91pts: This bright, elegant white has rather restrained varietal aromas evoking hawthorn, hay, citrus and wild herb. It’s racy and tangy, featuring white grapefruit, green melon and flinty mineral flavors alongside crisp acidity.

A particularly versatile white wine, this Sauvignon is the result of the particular characteristics of its terroir of origin, the Friuli hills adjacent to the Plessiva Natural Park. Straw yellow in color, intense fruit and floral aromas of grapefruit, elderberry flowers and freshly cut grass lead the way. A full-bodied mouth with a brisk acidity supports notes of citrus (tangerine, grapefruit) and an appealing minerality.

Ronco dei Tassi vineyard philosophy is simple and straightforward: pay the utmost attention to how the land is cultivated and how the vineyards are managed. This entails carrying out rigorous and frequent inspections, qualitative (visual) as well as quantitative (analytical). Such attention and rigor ensures that only the best and healthiest fruit is used to produce the simplest and most authentic wines possible, wines that fully express the character of the different varieties, indigenous and international, and the Friuli territory.

Ronco dei Tassi was started as a family owned and run estate and continues as such with sons Matteo and Enrico joining the business. The estate has also grown in size. Today they own over 30 hectares (75 acres) of which 18 (45 acres) are planted to vines with the rest being left as forested land, something they consider essential because it is this relationship between cultivated land and wooded land that allows them to develop and maintain an environment where sustainable agriculture can be practiced with all the implicit benefits customers can expect. The family firmly believes that these values act as a further guarantee that will ensure, they hope, the future of their splendid territory.

In addition to the flagship brand Ronco dei Tassi, the Estate produces the unique label Vigna del Lauro. With Fabio Coser at the helm, Vigna del Lauro is a gem of a winery comprised of a series of small single-vineyard sites nestled primarily in the heart of the Collio, in the township of Cormòns. Vines are planted with ideal southern exposures at altitudes ranging from 140 to 200 meters (459-656 feet) above sea level. A wide variety of wines are produced, focusing on both typical Friulian and international grape varieties, though total production of these Collio and Isonzo DOC wines is miniscule and rarely exceeds 6,000 cases.
